What happens when music moves from East to West, and West to East? Expectations are turned on their head in this fascinating programme of soul music from two continents that has stood the test of time.

In the 1920s and ‘30s, tango was all the rage in Poland, and many of Poland’s best-known tango composers and musicians were Jewish. Whilst the music of Argentina had migrated eastwards, discs recorded in Buenos Aires in the 1940s and 50s reveal a thriving market for the eastern European Jewish music that we now call klezmer. Here we present a selection of our favourite songs in Polish and Yiddish, dance melodies, and stories about the music & musicians.

Presented by the Reverse Polarity Ensemble: Ilana Cravitz (violin), Sarha Moore (alto saxophone), Yair Schleider (accordion & ukelele), Julia Doyle (double bass) and Yoav Oved (vocals).
